Correcting
some common myths about hypnosis!
Hypnotism only works on weak-minded people.
Actually, the more intelligent a person is, the easier it is
to hypnotise them.
A Hypnotist has extraordinary powers.
Totally wrong! A Hypnotist is an ordinary person who has
studied and mastered the skills of using the power of
suggestion to help people live happier and more productive
lives.
When under hypnosis, you are "asleep' or
unconscious.
No! You are not asleep or unconscious. It is possible to fall
asleep, your mind, however, is in an altered state of
consciousness, whilst your body is deeply relaxed. Thus, any
suggestion given to you by the hypnotherapist, will be acted
upon more easily by the subconscious mind. Also, you will
carry out any post-hypnotic suggestions given whilst under
hypnosis, when you come out of hypnosis.
When hypnotised, can you be made to do
things against your will.
Absolutely incorrect. You cannot be hypnotised against your
will, nor made to do anything you would not freely do when not
under hypnosis.
You can get 'locked-in' when under
hypnosis.
Another incorrect statement. In an extreme case, if anything
happened to your hynotherapist during a session, you would
simply drift into a natural sleep and soon wake up.
Traditional Hypnosis The traditional method of hypnosis
offers direct suggestions to the subject. This method can
effect alterations in the patient's behaviour and result in a
symptomatic cure. HOWEVER, THIS MAY ONLY BE A TEMPORARY
SITUATION!
